Did you know that the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 was a turning point in the history of psychedelics?
When President Richard Nixon signed the act into law, it effectively demonized all psychedelics by classifying them as Schedule I substances—meaning they were deemed to have no medical value and a high potential for abuse.
This legislation not only halted research into the therapeutic potential of psychedelics but also criminalized their use, shaping public perception for decades.
However, in recent years, the tide has turned.
Studies are now uncovering the benefits of psychedelics in treating conditions like depression, anxiety, and PTSD.
Cities and states across the U.S. are starting to decriminalize or even legalize these substances for therapeutic use, signaling a significant shift in how we view these powerful compounds.

CHANGING MINDS🧠
Tripping Away Addiction 🍄💊
Recent research is shedding light on the untapped potential of psychedelics like psilocybin and LSD to combat alcohol use disorder (AUD) and other forms of addiction.
Two new studies are stirring excitement in the scientific community, suggesting these substances could revolutionize how we treat addiction.
One study focused on a group of ten adults with severe AUD who were given a single 25mg dose of psilocybin.
The results?
A significant drop in alcohol consumption over 12 weeks, with participants reporting fewer drinks per day and fewer heavy drinking days. More strikingly, most participants also experienced a surge in self-efficacy—the confidence to stay sober—that remained elevated throughout the study period.
Another study, published in Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry, explored the broader potential of classic psychedelics for treating addiction.
The researchers found that these substances could be particularly effective for AUD by promoting neuroplasticity in the brain—essentially rewiring how the brain responds to alcohol.
While the initial results are promising, the studies come with caveats.
The small sample sizes, lack of control groups, and potential biases mean that more extensive, placebo-controlled trials are necessary to draw definitive conclusions. But as the research continues, psychedelics could very well become a cornerstone in the fight against addiction, offering new hope to those struggling with AUD.

MOVING THE NEEDLE🪡
Feds Bet $2.4 Million on Psychedelics to Tackle Meth Addiction💰
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is allocating $2.4 million to explore the potential of psychedelics in treating methamphetamine addiction. With fatal overdoses involving meth on a steep rise—nearly fivefold between 2015 and 2022—this research could be a game-changer.
The five-year grant will support studies at the University of California San Diego, Louisiana State University Health Shreveport, and the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Researchers aim to uncover how psychedelics like psilocybin can combat addiction while minimizing their intense psychoactive effects.
The ultimate goal?
To develop new drugs that harness the therapeutic benefits of psychedelics without the hallucinogenic trip.
There are currently no pharmacological treatments for methamphetamine addiction
This project could pave the way for new therapies that significantly impact the lives of those battling addiction.
By focusing on serotonin receptors, particularly 5-HT2A, researchers hope to create more manageable treatments that could potentially be used regularly, addressing the public health crisis head-on.
