A study from Spain’s Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria tested a low-dose of 1cp-LSD (a legal LSD derivative) on a 13-year-old dog named Lola to find out. With a history of severe separation anxiety, Lola was given a small dose and then observed over five hours.

The result? Remarkable. 

Researchers noted a significant reduction in anxiety without any signs of a psychedelic experience, making this the first-ever documented use of psychedelics in treating dog anxiety.

The study is a big deal, especially since about 20% of dogs experience anxiety—a condition traditionally treated with meds like antidepressants and benzodiazepines, which often have side effects.

With no adverse reactions and a clear improvement in Lola’s behavior, researchers see a potential breakthrough. They noted that Lola remained calm even during her usual stress triggers, such as when her owner left the house—something that typically sends her into a barking frenzy.

But don’t start slipping psychedelics into your pup’s treats just yet. While these early results are promising, researchers emphasize the need for more studies to understand the long-term effects of low-dose psychedelics on pets.

For now, the future of LSD in veterinary care remains an exciting, but still uncharted, territory.

DEA Boosts Psychedelic Production Quotas—But Why Is Cannabis Stuck in Neutral? 😶‍🌫️

The DEA has announced a plan to ramp up the production of certain psychedelics for research—specifically boosting quotas for psilocybin and psilocyn by 50%—but there’s one surprising outlier: cannabis.

While psychedelics like ibogaine, psilocybin, and psilocyn are getting a green light for expanded research, marijuana’s annual production quota remains frozen at 6,675,000 grams, the same level set back in 2023.

So why the discrepancy?

The DEA’s proposed increases aim to support clinical trials and research with psychedelics, which have been gaining traction for their therapeutic potential in mental health treatment.

“These proposed increases demonstrate DEA’s support for research,” the agency stated in a Federal Register notice. But when it comes to cannabis, the agency is holding steady as it waits for a December hearing that could lead to reclassifying marijuana to Schedule III of the Controlled Substances Act—a move that would lower research barriers for scientists.

This decision is a mixed bag for researchers.

On one hand, the increase in psychedelic production shows the DEA is recognizing its potential, especially as recent studies continue to show promise for conditions like PTSD and other mental illnesses. But the flatline in marijuana production quotas may hint that the DEA is holding off until a clearer federal stance on cannabis emerges.
