UNM’s Psychedelic Revolution 🔬

Researchers at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences, like Dr. Larry Leeman, are pioneering two new psilocybin studies. The RECONNECT study is exploring RE104, a novel compound related to psilocybin, as a potential rapid treatment for postpartum depression. Meanwhile, the uAspire study is assessing psilocybin’s benefits for major depressive disorder, ensuring that participants can access treatment regardless of initial results.

Leeman’s team is also investigating MDMA-assisted therapy for postpartum mothers with opioid use disorder. The goal is to alleviate PTSD symptoms that often drive drug use, with sessions facilitated by trained therapists.

At the Interdisciplinary Substance Use and Brain Injury Center (ISUBI), the team can safely conduct these trials, providing supportive environments for participants.

These innovative studies highlight UNM Health Sciences' commitment to advancing the understanding and treatment of behavioral health issues through psychedelic research.

DEA’s Psychedelics Ban: A Disservice to Science?🧪

Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) is fighting back against the DEA’s plan to classify 2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine (DOI) and 2,5-dimethoxy-4-chloroamphetamine (DOC) as Schedule I drugs.

SSDP argues that this move would block important research and isn't backed by the evidence. In a statement to the DEA’s court, they point out that neither drug has a high abuse potential, nor are there any serious side effects documented.

These psychedelics have shown promise in treating conditions like chronic pain and opioid addiction (plus much more). Over 35 years of research, including studies funded by federal health agencies, support their benefits. Banning these compounds would not only slow scientific progress but also prevent potential breakthroughs in mental health treatment.

While the DEA claims these substances are dangerous, scientists argue that the lack of major adverse events reported in medical literature does not support their classification as Schedule I drugs. SSDP insists the DEA’s actions undermine scientific research and the potential for medical advancements.
